Episode 20 was all about the point where a renovation competition stops pretending it is one big shared construction site. Adam and Jolene went big in House 1, Courtney and Sev were forced to tighten the purse strings, and Rick and Tayla finally got their fireplace across the line after a day that tested everybody's patience.

Adam And Jolene Go Big

With three days left to deliver the Living, Dining and Alfresco spaces, Adam and Jolene decided subtlety was not for them. Their giant floor-to-ceiling mirror, nearly four metres tall and worth $3,000, was craned into House 1 in high winds while the rest of the site watched on.

Jolene was understandably nervous as the mirror dangled above the build, but the couple were chasing the kind of visual impact that could finally get them a room win. The mirror was intended to pull the view into their living area, and there was certainly no chance of anyone missing it.

Then came their other big-ticket arrival, a custom 10-seater Christian Cole dining table. Adam knew the other houses would be watching, and he was right. The delivery landed especially badly for Sev, who had planned to buy the same table with Courtney before their earlier spending made it impossible.

It was a hard little reality check. Adam and Jolene were spending to make an impact, while Courtney and Sev were now working with a strict $15,000 budget across all three spaces. No fireplace, no custom dining table, and no room for another expensive gamble.

The Fireplace Finally Gets A Green Light

Over at House 5, Tayla's fireplace had become the renovation equivalent of an unread group chat. The concept itself was not the problem, but site manager Aiden needed clear specifications before anyone could build it.

After five attempts and another set of plans that did not give the team what they needed, Aiden reached his limit and stormed out. Fortunately, Tayla's installers were able to explain the design in a way that translated the idea into workable detail.

Fifteen minutes later, Rick and Tayla finally had approval. After all that drama, the fireplace could go ahead, which felt like a win before a single log had even gone near it.

Laura And Matty Bring The Cash

The episode did make room for a breather, sort of. Shelley Craft brought Laura Byrne and Matty J to the site for a Freedom styling challenge, with $5,000 up for grabs.

Rugs, lamps and plants started flying as the Blockheads raced to put together the best lounge. With budgets suddenly dictating almost every decision, the cash was not just a nice bonus. It was the sort of prize that could change how a house finished the week.

The Wet Saw That Changed The Mood

But the episode's real turning point came with a wet saw. Courtney and Sev had been sharing one with Rick and Tayla to keep their trade costs down. When that saw stopped working, Courtney and Rick asked Adam whether they could use the one he had hired.

The answer was a 'straight out no'. Adam said he needed the saw continuously until tools down, but the refusal landed very differently with the other houses.

Courtney called it a 'shady move', while Rick clocked a bigger shift in how House 1 was playing the game. Courtney's response was even clearer: 'I forgive, I don't forget.'

That is now the mood on site. Adam and Jolene are chasing a huge statement room, but their willingness to protect every advantage has put a target on their backs. The mirror may be the biggest thing in House 1, yet the wet saw was the detail everybody will remember.
