The South Australian funeral director told Woman’s Day that his preference on My Kitchen Rules “started as Manu, but finished as Colin”.

He enjoyed Colin’s willingness to tease everyone at the table. Both judges also worked through the funeral jokes inspired by Angus’s day job, right down to the inevitable coffin punchline.

Angus Is Used To Reading A Room

A fifth-generation funeral director, Angus says his work has taught him to navigate very different personalities and family dynamics. An Instant Restaurant dinner brings another room full of people who might not otherwise cross paths.

His friendship with teammate Simon began in hospitality, where Simon helped him move from dishwashing into waiting tables. They had been mates for about 12 years before entering the competition, but had not cooked together before MKR.

Their restaurant name, Last Orders, fits the humour they bring to the kitchen. Angus says finding chances to laugh helps balance the serious competition.

He also named Mary and Golden as the rivals who worried him most, pointing to their upbringing around family cooking. The jokes do not mean he has stopped watching the opposition.

A Kitchen Proposal With A Keyring

The gatecrashers’ arrival tested that easygoing approach too. Angus told TV WEEK he struggled with the idea of fresh teams joining after the original group had already cooked, and admitted he did not warm to the newcomers.

Angus’s life away from the judging table has supplied another memorable kitchen moment. He told TV WEEK that he recently became engaged after his original proposal plans went wrong.

He says the engagement ring was stolen from his car. Rather than wait for a replacement, he took his mother’s advice and proposed that night.

Angus cooked his girlfriend’s favourite sun-dried tomato ravioli with butter and sage sauce, dimmed the lights and played Taylor Swift. With no engagement ring available, he put a keyring on her finger.

“It’s more like me for things to go wrong before they go right,” he said.

Simon has been less fortunate in the show’s romance department, with Deanne shutting down any suggestion of a relationship. Angus, at least, has a successful kitchen proposal to remember alongside the dinner-party scores.
