With Rick forced to step away from the tools after his knee injury flared up, Tayla suddenly had her twin sister walking onto site to help House 5 get through the next room. In a Woman's Day interview, the sisters made it very clear that their family dynamic comes with love, loyalty and absolutely no shortage of blunt feedback.

Tayla said she was surprised when Shannen appeared, admitting she had a quick "what are we gonna do?" moment before realising her sister's styling skills could actually be exactly what they needed.

Shannen, meanwhile, said she had not fully understood how intense The Block really was until she got there herself. Apparently, watching your family talk about having a ball from afar does not quite prepare you for the competitive reality of group challenges, room deadlines and everyone suddenly taking salt very seriously.

Shannen Got A Fast Block Education

Shannen told Woman's Day that she had expected the show to be easier than it was, only to realise on site that the competition was properly full-on. She said the pressure became obvious during a group challenge at the pub, when Tayla told her to put her head down, grab her basket and push through if she had to.

Not exactly the gentle introduction a visiting family member might hope for. Shannen also joked about learning the hard way that taking salt from another team was not, apparently, the done thing.

The detail is funny, but it also explains why Shannen's arrival worked as more than just a family cameo. She was suddenly in the middle of a show that looks exhausting from the couch and seems even more chaotic when you are actually standing in the room with a deadline breathing down your neck.

Shannen had a bit of Block history before this, too. She originally auditioned with Rick back in 2014, but told Woman's Day she does not feel jealous that Tayla ended up on the show instead. She said she is more comfortable being behind the screen and in control of what goes out about her.

Given how quickly Block opinions can form around one edit, one challenge and one stray facial expression, that feels like a very sensible survival instinct.

The Twins Are Not Pretending To Be Besties

The interview also gave a pretty honest look at Tayla and Shannen's relationship. Tayla said the pair have not really been "besties", while Shannen said they grew into different people and their personalities clash.

That does not mean there is some huge family feud brewing. If anything, the whole thing reads like two siblings who know exactly which buttons to press and are not especially interested in pretending otherwise for the cameras.

The sisters traded a few classic twin jabs in the interview. Tayla called out Shannen for being on FaceTime on site, while Shannen said she had complimented Tayla during painting only for the moment to turn tense because everyone was tired.

Then came the line that probably made Tayla blink twice. Shannen said Tayla should be grateful that one moment did not make it to air, because after Tayla teased her for being an influencer, Shannen shot back that Tayla had gone on The Block for "five minutes of fame".

Tayla pushed back on that idea, saying she went on the show for Rick and for her son's future. That answer also lines up with a separate New Idea interview, where Tayla responded to viewers who have accused her of not pulling her weight.

Tayla Has Been Fighting The Lazy Edit

Tayla has been under a pretty harsh spotlight this season, with some viewers questioning how much work she is doing on site compared with Rick. New Idea reported that even fellow Blockheads Chantel and Wyatt had commented on the impression that Tayla was not doing much around the build.

Tayla told the outlet that she was not just there for attention and said she had worked hard because she wanted to build a future for her son and help live out Rick's dream.

She also said the audience has only seen small moments of her doing silly things, which she framed as part of her personality rather than proof she was not doing the work. Rick backed her up, saying viewers were not seeing everything Tayla had contributed.

That is where Shannen's Woman's Day comments become more interesting. She did tease Tayla, and she clearly has no plans to wrap her sister in bubble wrap, but she also defended her against the idea that the TV edit shows the whole picture.

Shannen said she believed Tayla was getting a "bad edit", with clips of her sitting around making it to air while other work was left out. She also said Tayla is great TV, which is maybe the most sibling-coded compliment possible: supportive, slightly savage and probably accurate.

Family Comes First In House 5

For all the blunt one-liners, Shannen made it clear she is proud of both Tayla and Rick. She said she thinks they have a strong chance of winning and especially wants it for their dad, who she described as exactly the person viewers are seeing on screen.

That gives the whole dynamic a bit more warmth than the headline-ready barbs suggest. Shannen may be direct, and Tayla may be used to firing back, but underneath all of that is a family trying to keep House 5 moving while Rick recovers.

It is also a reminder that The Block loves a renovation crisis, but family pressure can be just as revealing as any unfinished ensuite. Sometimes the person who arrives to help you paint is also the person who will roast your life choices before the undercoat is dry.

Shannen's arrival has given Tayla another voice in her corner, even if that voice occasionally comes with a side of "get off FaceTime" energy. Honestly, that might be exactly what House 5 needs right now.
