Front yards and facades were the last renovation hurdle, but House 4 was starting the week with two problems: a budget that needed serious surgery and neighbours who still wanted answers about that cellar.
Sev Has Had Enough Of The Cellar Argument
Sunday's 34.5-point tie meant Adam and Jolene and Courtney and Sev would split the $10,000 prize and share the winners' getaway with Scott Cam. It had done considerably less to bring the two households together.
Jolene and Lisa were still questioning how House 4 had paid less than half the claimed $100,000 value of its wine cellar. Sev wanted to know whether they were settling the argument there and then or saving it for Scotty.
Her patience ran out when Lisa raised the issue again. Sev struck the table and rejected the idea that the supplier's pricing was her responsibility.
She was even blunter to camera: 'Don't be a sore loser just because you paid more.'
Sev and Jolene eventually shared an awkward hug. After that conversation, it was a fairly ambitious attempt at a fresh start.
A Win Still Leaves House 4 Short
Open for Inspections gave the teams a chance to compare the finished spaces for themselves. Adam still preferred the X-factor of his own cellar, while Courtney was impressed by what she saw on the walk-through.
Then attention turned to the final reveal. Scotty suggested a $20,000 budget for the front yards and facades, and Courtney and Sev had $25,000 left in the bank.
That might have sounded encouraging until landscaper Troy Lovett put their original front-yard design at $45,000. They were already $20,000 short of the plan before the next problem arrived.
Troy questioned how much longer he could remain on the job. Without a challenge win to bring in extra cash, he warned that the girls could end up 'packing up and going home'.
The Phone Call Makes Everything Worse
The pair tried to reset around a $25,000 budget. Then Troy rang with news of another bill of roughly $20,000, including GST, covering the deck and work from the previous week.
Courtney and Sev argued that someone with Troy's experience on the show should have anticipated the costs. From their side, an unexpected bill at this point left them trying to solve a problem they believed should have been flagged earlier.
Troy pushed back. He said he had warned them that their $18,000 wine cellar would take money out of the labour budget.
The decision to protect the cellar by cutting landscaping money was now hanging over House 4. The feature that helped deliver a judging win had left very little room for anything else to go wrong.
With no rescue secured, Courtney and Sev had to strip back the front-yard design and find a way to finish. Disqualification remained a risk, rather than something they could dismiss as last week's scare.
Chantel And Wyatt Finally Collect An Award
The final family dinner of the season brought a welcome change of mood. For a little while, everyone could sit together and laugh without another invoice taking centre stage.
Chantel and Wyatt even collected an award for attending every Aldi family dinner. They still hadn't won a room, but their commitment to showing up for a meal was officially recognised.
House 4's money trouble, unfortunately, was still waiting after dinner. A shared win and a neighbourly hug hadn't paid for the front yard.
The Block continues tonight at 7.30pm on Nine and 9Now.
