Now Woman's Day claims their bromance has hit a "frosty" patch. The report relies on an unnamed on-set source, who described the two coaches as mates but "both pretty stubborn" when they disagree.

Did The Jokes Go Too Far?

The reported tension centres on Ronan teasing Richard about his habit of dropping celebrity names. That running joke has already featured prominently on the show, with Richard casually rolling out collaborators including Celine Dion, Luther Vandross and Justin Timberlake while Ronan keeps score.

Woman's Day's source claimed Richard did not find every joke funny and made his frustration clear to Ronan after filming. The same source alleged the atmosphere sometimes became tense once the cameras stopped, despite the pair appearing friendly on screen.

Viewers have certainly seen them turn competition into theatre. In one Blind Audition, Richard jokingly told Ronan, "You're dead to me," after losing an artist to his fellow coach. The Voice Australia's official video leaned firmly into the gag, calling Ronan Richard's "best frenemie".

Speaking to Canberra's Hit 104.7 on 30 July, Ronan said he and Richard were "very good friends" and had "a great friendship". He joked that they shared a martini most nights and praised Richard as a performer, adding: "I love him. I'm a big fan."

The friendship predates their red chairs by more than two decades. Ronan said they wrote several songs together in 2003 and 2004, and later performed together when Richard played a Sydney show.

That history has made their rivalry easy television. Richard has blocked Ronan in the Blind Auditions, while Ronan was visibly stunned when Richard sent an entire Knockout group home without choosing a winner.
