It was a brutal way to bring the round to a close, especially when every other coach was busy making hard choices and using their one save to reshape the field. The Voice has narrowed things down, but Richard's final call ensured the show did not get there quietly.

A Knockout With No Winner

The format put the artists into groups of three or four, with each singer performing individually. Only one person from each group could go straight through to the Quarter Finals, while the coaches held one save each for an artist from a rival team.

Richard's final group left him weighing up Cherry, Saem and Dicko. Rather than pick a winner, he decided none of the three had done enough to progress.

That meant no last-minute rescue, no neatly completed team and no hiding from the fact that the coach was prepared to carry fewer artists into the next stage. Sonia Kruger and the other coaches were visibly taken aback, and Ronan Keating said he had not seen that situation in his years with the franchise.

Leyla Gets The Night's Big Vote Of Confidence

Not every decision was quite so icy. Twelve-year-old Leyla Sabo performed Sienna Spiro's You Stole The Show and drew a huge response from the panel, with Melanie C suggesting they may have just seen the winner.

Elsewhere, Tommy Novak took on Celine Dion's All By Myself, Cleo Paladino performed Ariana Grande's God Is A Woman, and Phoebe Rose sang Lady A's Need You Now. Yung Milla delivered Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise, while Charlotte June tackled R.E.M.'s Everybody Hurts.

The episode had the usual Knockouts mix of big notes, bigger nerves and coaches having to explain why one singer's moment was enough while another person's was not. But the saves proved just as important as the direct winners.

The Saves Rebuild The Teams

Taylor Beadle-Williams missed direct progression with Team Kate, then performed Lizzo's Juice and received save offers from all three rival coaches. She chose Team Melanie C, giving that team another serious performer for the Quarter Finals.

The 60Four were also saved after receiving offers from Richard and Ronan, choosing Team Ronan. Kate Miller-Heidke used her save on Daisha Auda, while Richard kept teenage rock band Wave Raiders in the competition.

Richard goes into the Quarter Finals with Tika Centinch, Tommy and Wave Raiders. Melanie has Cleo, Jack Hughes, Taylor and Victoria Knight. Ronan's group includes Jamie Koul, Leyla, Phoebe and The 60Four, while Kate has Bertie Anderson, Charlotte, Daisha and Yung Milla.

The Quarter Final Field Is Locked

The numbers make Richard's decision impossible to ignore. His team has three Quarter Finalists, while the other coaches each head into the next stage with four artists. It is not an accidental gap created by a save going elsewhere. It is the result of a coach deciding that the final Knockout group should not add anyone to the field.

For the artists who did make it through, the job now changes again. The Knockouts were about surviving their immediate group and finding a coach's vote of confidence. The Quarter Finals will put the remaining acts under a sharper spotlight, with every team now carrying a mix of direct picks and saved performers.

That is a strong field, but Richard's vacant spot hangs over it. A competition built around finding the best voice has suddenly made room for the possibility that, sometimes, the coach simply does not hear one.
