Sunday night's episode launched the first round of the 2026 Knockouts, with artists who survived the Blind Auditions finally forced to compete against members of their own team.

The format is ruthless by design. The coaches can love more than one performance, but only a few singers can keep moving towards the Quarter Finals.

For Team Ronan, that pressure landed on three names fans are now talking about: Leyla Sabo, Jamie Koul and Sam Cliffe.

Leyla Sabo Moves Through

Leyla Sabo's Quarter Finals spot appears to be the least controversial part of the night.

The young Melbourne singer performed "You Stole the Show" by Sienna Spiro and was chosen by Ronan to continue in the competition.

It continues a huge run for Leyla, who was only 12 when she auditioned and has since turned 13 during the season. Her age has been part of the conversation around her, but so has the size of her voice.

After her Knockouts result, Leyla is now one step closer to the pointy end of the season. That is a serious result for any contestant, let alone one still balancing the show with normal school life.

Jamie Koul Gets The Nod Too

Ronan also selected Jamie Koul to move forward after Jamie performed "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye.

Jamie has already had one of the more unusual paths through the season. He initially failed to turn chairs in the Blind Auditions, was picked up through the Team Tones second-chance twist, then returned and earned a place on Team Ronan.

That comeback story clearly has appeal, and Ronan's decision keeps it alive for at least one more round.

But this is where the episode became messy for viewers at home, because Jamie moving through meant Sam Cliffe's run ended.

Sam Cliffe's Exit Sparks The Reaction

Sam's elimination became the decision fans were still chewing over after the episode.

WHO reported that many viewers were disappointed Ronan chose Jamie over Sam, with some arguing Sam should have been the one to continue to the Quarter Finals.

That kind of backlash is baked into The Knockouts. Once the show moves past the chair-turning glow of the Blind Auditions, every coach has to make choices that leave good singers behind.

Still, Ronan's call clearly hit a nerve because fans had already become invested in Sam's voice and presence.

It also puts Jamie in a tricky position. Being chosen is a victory, but being chosen over a fan favourite means the next performance needs to quiet the room a little.

The Knockouts Are Doing Their Job

The first Knockouts episode did exactly what this stage is supposed to do: sharpen the competition fast.

Leyla's rise continued, Jamie's second-chance story survived another round, and Sam's exit gave fans a result to debate.

That is the point where The Voice starts to feel less like a talent showcase and more like a competition. The coaches are no longer building teams. They are cutting them down.

And if Ronan's first major Knockouts decision caused this much noise, the rest of the round is probably not going to be gentle.
