With the Blind Auditions moving into the business end, the coaches are running out of room to play it safe. Monday's episode was a reminder that a big voice can still change the board very quickly.

Edde Masson Gives Melanie C Her Moment

Sunshine Coast singer Edde Masson put her own looping spin on Melanie C's I Turn To You, which is a fairly brave song choice when the original singer is sitting a few metres away in a red chair. It paid off, with all four coaches turning.

Ronan Keating, Kate Miller-Heidke and Richard Marx all wanted Masson on their teams, while Melanie C had the added emotional advantage of hearing a familiar song reworked from the stage. Masson ultimately chose Team Melanie C, giving the coach a genuinely memorable addition as places start to disappear.

It was a particularly satisfying fit for the episode because Masson was not simply doing a faithful cover to win over the room. The looping arrangement made the performance feel like her own, then gave Melanie C the chance to hear one of her biggest songs from a completely different angle.

Wave Raiders Bring Their Own Sound

The Sunshine Coast trio Wave Raiders went in a different direction, performing their original song Don't Want To Be Late. The band, made up of two brothers and their longtime mate, earned two chair turns with their punk-pop sound and musicianship.

They chose Team Kate Miller-Heidke. Original songs can be a gamble on a show built around enormous covers, but the group gave the coaches a clear idea of who they are before anyone could suggest a more obvious classic.

For Kate, it is a useful addition at a point where the teams are becoming more distinct. Wave Raiders arrived with a sound and a shared history already in place, rather than needing to work out their identity after the chairs had turned.

Jerikye Williams Heads To Team Ronan

Jerikye Williams brought the rock-and-roll energy with Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. The Elvis tribute artist earned two chair turns, then opted for Team Ronan.

Williams also spoke about wanting to become a positive role model for Aboriginal children. It gave his audition a little more heart than a neat piece of retro showmanship, and Ronan now has a performer who clearly knows how to own a stage.

It was another useful result for the coaches, who are not just filling teams now, but working out which artists can make it through the next phase of the competition.

Tones And I Steps In Again

The episode's final twist came after Moniquewa Williams performed the Spice Girls' Wannabe without turning a chair. Tones And I stepped in with another secret save, backing Moniquewa's potential and giving her a place in the competition.

That makes Moniquewa the eighth artist saved by Tones And I this season. It is an increasingly important part of the format, and it means the other coaches may yet find themselves facing artists they thought had already left the building.

So while Edde had the night's cleanest win with all four chairs, the episode did not finish on the usual have-a-nice-life note for an artist who missed out. Tones And I kept the door open, and that secret team is starting to look less like a novelty and more like a real complication for everyone else.
